Phase 01
Cutting paper exercises followed by online and library research!
Groups were asked to fairly pick and choose what months they would work on to depict with only three colors of construction paper. Cutting and pasting was required in order to develop designs on a 2 inch x 2 inch piece of paper.
Research
A collection of images taken from various books in the graphic design section of Sprague Library on MSU's campus. This physical assembly is accompanied by ongoing internet based research.
Our group of five students pulled about 10 books from the shelves and altogether we book marked several pages that stood out to us. Each page is not only based on the aesthetics, but with each assigned month kept in mind for concept sketches.
Three book covers of that we used most entitled, "Creative Jolt Inspirations" by Rose Gonnella, Robin Landa, Denise M. Anderson; "Graphic Design Visionaries" by Caroline Roberts; "Graphic Design Annual (2015, 2022)". Each book was based on shape usage, layouts, arrangement and comparison of different time frames of design.
Concept Development & Sketches
Pages upon pages were used to create sketches for my assigned months of September and November. As a group of five, we collaboratively contributed to two remaining months that were unassigned: June and July.
At the beginning of this process, our group compiled a list of what each month was associated with in order to aid us in our cut-and-paste step. From there I sketched ideas for September based on "back to school", which included:
-
Teacher's apple
-
Books and spiral notebooks
-
Grass to represent a fresh start to a new school year
November's sketches were based on Thanksgiving, even though I listed other holidays as well. I was fond of:
-
A broken up and cracked maple leaf
-
Feathers of a turkey
-
Cornucopia
-
There were less sketches for November because I had a clear idea of what I wanted to make.
The entire group decided to focus on:
-
Sunny days as Summer begins
-
Grainy particles to represent sand, big enough to stand out
-
A rainbow (that would connect to March) in order to represent June as LGBTQ+ Pride month
